Hansen Cold Storage
For this project Brownco poured a 16,000 SF freezer slab in Ontario.
Freezer slabs are two-part systems, meaning they have a bottom slab and top slab with a high-density rigid foam in between.
This system prevents the cold from the freezer transferring to the subgrade below and freezing the water molecules in the soil. When that occurs, you get a heaving or “snowball” effect where the water molecules in the subgrade freeze and expand thus lifting and causing damage to the slab.
Brownco broke and removed 16,000 SF of the existing building’s slab on grade. We excavated down 17” additional inches and scarified and compacted the subgrade. Hansen installed a glycol system and Brownco installed a matt of #4 rebar and poured the bottom slab.
Hansen then installed 7” of the high-density rigid foam insulation, which Brownco then installed another mat of #4 rebar and poured back the new 6” top slab. The whole pour consisted of 32,000 SF and approximately 600 cubic yards of concrete placed.
This project also entailed the installation of a new 30’x80’ exterior condenser foundation, steel supports to elevate the condensers and high-end screen wall to shield it from the public view.
