Cement … the fundamental element

Concrete is the most widely used man-made material in the world, and it is the foundation of countless structures, from roads and bridges to buildings and homes. But have you ever wondered what makes concrete so strong and durable and such an effective construction material?

The answer lies in one of its primary components: cement.

Cement is a fine powder made from limestone, clay, and other minerals. When mixed with water it forms a paste that binds together the sand and gravel or crushed stone which are the other components used in concrete.

Cement as we know it, ‘Portland cement’ to give it its full name, was first produced early in the 19th century by a bricklayer in Leeds, England. He made the discovery by burning powdered limestone and clay in his kitchen stove.

Today’s method of cement production is somewhat more complicated:

  • The first stage is to quarry the principal raw materials, typically limestone, clay, and other materials.
  • The materials are then crushed or pushed through hammer mills several times until the materials are in pieces no larger than 3 inches and then mixed with other materials such as iron ore and fly ash.
  • The mix is then fed through a cylindrical kiln and is heated to about 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • During heating certain elements are burnt off in the form of gases while the remaining elements combine to form a new compound known as “clinker” which exits the kiln in the form of grey balls which are the size of marbles.
  • The red-hot clinker is cooled, the hot air from the coolers being recycled into the kilns, and is then crushed and ground whilst small amounts of gypsum and limestone are added.
  • The finished cement is so fine that 1 pound contains some 150 billion individual grains.

The quality and composition of cement is governed and controlled by the ASTM C150 regulations.

Within those regulations there are some six main classifications of the product. They are defined by the specifics of the quantities of the constituent parts and enable concrete for different purposes.

Cement production in the United States reached an estimated 1.05 billion tons in 2022, the highest level recorded to date.

Here are some of the reasons why cement is so important in the creation of concrete:

Cement is the “glue” that holds the aggregate materials together in concrete, creating a strong and durable material. When the cement paste hardens or “cures”, it forms a solid matrix that binds the aggregate materials and resists the forces of compression and tension.

Cement allows for the creation of a wide range of concrete types, each with different properties suited to specific applications. For example, Portland cement Type I is used for general construction. High-performance cement is used in applications that require exceptional qualities in terms of strength, durability and water resistance, such as bridges, water ways and high-rise buildings.

  • Enables Workability

Cement helps to make concrete more workable, allowing it to be molded and shaped to fit specific needs. This is particularly important for architectural and decorative concrete, where intricate shapes and patterns can be created. The colour of the concrete can also be controlled by the constitution of the cement.

  • Improves Sustainability

Cement can also contribute to the sustainability of concrete. The use of blended cements, which combine Portland cement with supplementary materials such as fly ash or slag. This can reduce the amount of energy and raw materials required to produce the cement and reduces the carbon footprint of concrete.
